Caffe Medici, a coffee shop that replaced Metro on Guadalupe, offers high-quality espresso and a student-friendly atmosphere.

Metro Espresso Bar on the Drag is no more, and in its place a new character appears in the epic saga of Drag coffee shops, Caffe Medici. The campus location opened just a few weeks ago.

Caffe Medici may have displaced the old favorite campus-area coffee shop, but the place is much more pleasant than Metro, and the espresso is surprisingly good.

Most student-centric coffee shops don't put much effort into their espresso, but the minute you walk in and see their two huge La Marzocco espresso machines, it is evident that Medici knows what it is doing. La Marzoccos are the Rolls-Royces of the espresso world.

While the place has been essentially empty at times, once people realize that this place is here and make better drinks than the nearby Starbucks, customers will be flocking. Unlike the defunct Metro, Caffe Medici have a mellow and study-friendly atmosphere with plenty of tables.

Unfortunately, the coffee shop is a bit pricier than college students are used to. The prices aren't completely obnoxious, but a soy latte is $0.75 more than at other coffee haunts, and they charge $2 for a tiny bottle of Perrier.

So avoid the excessively expensive sparkling water, accept the fact that good espresso costs a smidge more and support a local coffee shop that actually cares about its coffee.

Caffe Medici is located at 2222 Guadalupe Street and is open Monday through Friday, 6 a.m.-midnight, Saturday and Sunday 8 a.m.-midnight.
