Not since Little Richard came to campus has an event been fought for with so much passion in The Daily Texan office as with last week's presidential debates. Tears were shed, hearts were broken and beliefs were shaken. Since every other department got dibs on the event ahead of Life & Arts - even Sports - we decided to utilize our skills and not deny you the gripping coverage that only we could provide for this monumental event. The following several paragraphs are merely a teaser of the golden prose you've been denied for the past four days.
First and foremost, the costumes were extravagant. Not since "Elizabeth: The Golden Age" have the wardrobe choices been so precise and well-tailored. We particularly enjoyed the symbolism inherent in Sen. Clinton's gold-collar-on-collar action. The contrast of Obama's rich red tie was a bold statement and truly brought out his eyes, which were the windows to his character's soul.
The roles in this debate were on par with other legendary performances of yore: Marlon Brando in "The Godfather," Daniel Day-Lewis in "There Will Be Blood" and Fred Dalton Thompson as Air Traffic Controller Trudeau in "Die Hard 2: Die Harder." Unfortunately, the emoting of Univision correspondent Jorge Ramos was overshadowed by the subtle nuances of panelist John King's hair.
Overall, the production values were sleek, adding a much-needed sense of realism to the piece. Unfortunately, the camera angles and lack of dramatic editing choices failed to highlight the aforementioned thespians. Perhaps in the upcoming debates, CNN will be wise enough to snag such visionary directors as Martin Scorsese or Baz Luhrmann to spice up the visual palate.
Overall, with its strong performances, witty exchange of dialogue and optimistic themes that captured the hearts of millions, this debate coverage will be remembered for ages on this fair campus.
