The Buffalo Exchange chain of vintage stores got an early start on Earth Day festivities Saturday when they held a benefit sale for Lonesome George, the last known surviving Pinta tortoise. The sale, proceeds of which go to the Galapagos Conservatory, aims to help fund efforts to locate turtles of identical or similar species to George so that he might find a mate and save his species from extinction. Buffalo Exchange stores have had similar benefit sales since 1997 and have raised over $200,000 for various environmental causes.

Buffalo Exchange's sale was just one part of the outdoor activity, which included a DJ outside Antone's for Record Store Day one block north of the intersection of Guadalupe and 29th streets last Saturday. The assortment of sale clothes displayed on dress racks and strewn about buckets attracted interested passersby all day.

"We're selling a bunch of cute, current clothing for a dollar per item," associate manager Alanna Loosem explained of the sidewalk sale. "Hopefully, we'll find [George] a little lady."

Galapagos Conservatory and Buffalo Exchange's hopes may soon be fulfilled: the one day total of just the Guadalupe store's sale was over $1,600. With 33 other stores nationwide participating in the sale, the nearly century-old tortoise may just have the backing to finally find his little lady.
