An accident near the intersection 15th and Lavaca streets left one dead on Friday.

Austin Police Department officers responded to the incident at 5:36 p.m. and EMS promptly transported the jogger to University Medical Center at Brackenridge, where she was pronounced deceased.

“We got on scene and ascertained that a vehicle came out of a private driveway and struck a jogger who was jogging down the sidewalk,” said APD Cpl. Paul Kaderli.

He said as the SUV was turning eastbound on 15th street, out of a driveway between Lavaca and Colorado streets, it struck a female jogger who was running west.

The SUV that struck the jogger was identified as a brown Nissan Pathfinder.

Kaderli said he was not sure if the driver of the Pathfinder was alone or not. He said 15th Street is “not historically [dangerous], it’s unusual.”

A United States Postal Service employee was told to remain on scene to provide information for APD, since his white USPS truck was close to the incident.

Several citizens watched and questioned what happened, each grabbing for their cell phones and cameras. A family stood crowded about a white Chevy car, crying, not willing to give a comment.

Officers painted the vehicles’ position on the road.

“Everyone be aware of everyone around you,” Kaderli said. “Drivers need to be aware of pedestrians and pedestrians should be aware of drivers too.”

I agree that the first scentence especially should be rewritten to be more sensitive, but don't be mad because they are reporting the news! My heart goes out to the family and friends who expierienced this tragic loss. Please, pedestrians and automobile drivers, watch out for each other!

This is incredibly tragic story about a real person!! I appreciate Cprl Kaderli bringing it home for all of us. The article needs to be posted everywhere!! I came within inches of being mowed down on Gaudelupe last week by a speeding motorist who ran a red light and kept on going. If it weren't for one of the Hobos behind me jerking me back and out of harms way I would also be the topic of another stab at journalism. There is a life lesson here!! What more can be done to protect the UT pedestrians before another life is loss!!

Yeah, I don't see how this is offensive in any way. It was a tragedy and this seems like a very neutral report on it.

Don't take this down. It's not insensitive, and news reporting shouldn't be erased because of its emotional effects. This is written exactly how a professional would report on a traffic fatality. Just the facts. How people are reading this as an attempt at creative writing I do not know. Perhaps grief is clouding their judgment.

My heart goes out to everyone for this loss, but this report is written exactly as it should have been.

I grew up with this girl. I have known her since I was 4 years old, and I am 20 now. A terribly insensitive article written by a terribly untalented writer.

This article shows how far journalists students have to go before they can be a part of a REAL newspaper. Please, learn what you are doing before posting such a crappy report. Actually, I hope the author is only do this part time, because you have no future in this business. And to the editor- you are just as guilty. Horrible... I can't believe this paper represents my school...

Horribly offensive way to start an article. This girl was a dear friend and the Texan ought to be ashamed of this coverage. Please respect her friends and family and edit this.

This needs to be retracted, a fellow student and a friend has died, this isn't something to catch peoples eye and have them pick up the paper, show some respect.

This article is very insensitive. This article is about someone's daughter, friend, and girlfriend. Have some respect for those of us who are suffering in this time of great loss.

For Christ's sake, this article reads like the intro to a dime novel. She was a friend and this isn't a creative writing blog. Have some freaking sensitivity.
