A high rise alarm triggered by burning debris at the Quarters apartment complex attracted fire trucks, ambulances and police cars to West Campus and forced residents out on the streets early Wednesday morning.

Kevin Dixon, spokesman for Austin Fire Department, said that an alarm activation at about 1:18 a.m. was confirmed when smoke was found in a lower floor utility room by the first team of firemen on the scene. Dixon said firemen found smoldering debris in a trash chute that ran from the first to eighth floor.

"There was no structural damage from the fire and none from the water," Dixon said.

Lexi Neely, another resident waiting outside with dozens others in the flashing emergency lights, said she didn't think the damage would be too severe based on what she had seen when leaving the building.

"All we could see is smoke, no flames," Neely said.

Pretty sure it was the greyson house. I live in Nueces house and if I ever heard a fire alarm, I would evacuate. Just because I live in West Campus, does not mean I am a drunk college kid

Pretty sure if I lived there I wouldn't have even evacuated. Not because I think I can brave a fire, but because fire alarms in those complexes go off on a weekly basis due to drunk students pulling them for the hell of it. Hardly anyone in the apartments evacuated when I lived at the Block. I sincerely hope there is never a bad fire in one of those apartments because-no doubt- there would be some tragedies.

Smoldering, not smouldering-- American spelling preferred.

This is bad journalism. Why? because there are six Quarters locations. Therefore, saying that "a high rise alarm triggered by burning debris at the Quarters apartment complex" tells me nothing. I would have to ask around to find out which of the 6 complexes it was. Come on Texan, I'm an avid reader and a student in the College of Communication. This just looks bad. :)
