Finance senior Sonali Ramolia collects donations in front of Gregory Gym Plaza for “Keep Child Alive” to raise awareness about the AIDS pandemic on Monday afternoon.

Sororities Omega Phi Alpha and Alpha Phi Alpha began a weeklong fundraiser Monday afternoon at Gregory Gym Plaza.

The “Who Gives a Buck” kickoff rally is part of the “Keep a Child Alive” campaign.

Passing students were asked to donate whatever they could to the campaign. A dollar donation would provide life-saving medication, support and orphan care to help keep children affected by AIDS alive.

“We’re raising money to help fight AIDS in Africa,” said Sonali Ramolia, Omega Phi Alpha secretary and a finance senior, adding that 100 percent of the proceeds were going to the campaign.

Every hour, 31 children die as a result of AIDS, according to AVERT, an international charity that supports HIV/AIDS relief.

“I believe supporting good causes is important and a great way to do that is [right here on campus],” said liberal arts sophomore Vithal Nainani, who donated money to the event and picked up some complementary food.
