Singer Annie Clark, better known as St. Vincent, is playing tonight at Mohawk.

If you haven’t heard of Annie Clark, better known as St. Vincent, now is as good a time as any. With the recent release of her sophomore album Actor, Clark is turning a lot of heads and attracting a lot of ears.

A St. Vincent album basically sounds like a mix of Billie Holiday’s elegant soul and Ladytron’s ferocious beats. Clark’s voice is sweet as honey, and the music makes you move and shake. But the best thing about St. Vincent is that you never really know what you’re going to get from song to song — there is always a surprise in store.

Clark shows she has tricks up her sleeves with songs like “Marrow” and “Black Rainbow,” which start off slow, melodious and charming and then explode into an array of pulsating drumbeats and screaming strings. “Actor Out of Work” seems to be the hottest track among fans, most likely because it has an obvious hook and a harmony of “oooh”s to sing along with.

Though she has yet to top the charts or sell out high-profile venues, St. Vincent will soon appear on “Late Show with David Letterman,” and just played the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Tennessee.

Luckily, you don’t have to travel across the country to experience St. Vincent live — all you need is $13 and a ride downtown. Oh, and don’t forget your dancing shoes.

What: St. Vincent
Where: Mohawk (912 Red River St.)
Where: Today at 8 p.m.
