Does UT have a liberal agenda? Campus bias wildly sensationalized

Right-wing culture warrior David Horowitz has come out with yet another anti-academic-freedom book and accompanying campus tour. The book, “One-Party Classroom,” is a virtually unreconstructed rehash of his previous books, “The Professors” and “Indoctrination U.” In these works he announces the shocking news that they teach feminism in women’s and gender studies, social movements in courses on social movements, and Arab and Muslim culture and politics in Middle Eastern studies.

Once a prominent member of the New Left, Horowitz has since established himself as an outspoken conservative advocate. Through his writing and activism, he is trying to convince the public that there is a crisis of political bias in college classrooms — one that needs to be solved by censoring the free exchange of ideas critical to higher education.
In 2007 he unsuccessfully brought the Academic Bill of Rights to the Texas Legislature.

Sponsored by state Sen. Jeff Wentworth, R-San Antonio, SCR 3 encouraged state colleges and universities to implement policies to safeguard the academic freedom of faculty and students. After facing evidence mounted by students and professors, SCR 3 failed in the Senate Subcommittee on Higher Education. When Pennsylvania set up a committee to investigate academic-freedom violations in the classroom, they found there were few, if any, problems and that legislation was not necessary.

In the same year, Horowitz helped to organize the “Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week,” a national campaign to mobilize college students in support of George Bush’s war on terror and the alleged threat that Islam poses to the very foundations of western civilization. The poster promoting the event featured a picture of a teenage girl being stoned as an example of the status of women in the Islamic world. As it turned out, the “stoning” pictured actually took place in the 1994 Dutch film “De Steen.” Horowitz opportunistically claimed to be defending the rights of women during this campaign even as he called for the censorship of courses in women’s and gender studies.

Free Exchange on Campus, a national organization committed to defending academic freedom, has investigated other claims Horowitz has advanced. They concluded that he has “played fast and loose” with the facts, inventing or distorting information from course syllabi and denying the relevance of political discourse in fields like communication, sociology and literature. Imagine if your favorite professors suddenly couldn’t connect the literature you were reading to current events or even teach in the subjects they were hired to teach simply because those areas did not meet the standards of orthodoxy demanded by Horowitz.

His efforts would seem feeble and irrelevant if not for the fact that academic freedom is still seriously threatened by the political right. University administrators, under pressure from the Department of Homeland Security and right-wing donors to University endowments, have been successful in key instances of harassing and firing outspoken left-wing intellectuals in recent years. Since 9/11, universities have largely cooperated with State Department and Homeland Security harassment, wiretapping and denial of entry to Middle Eastern and Muslim scholars, such as prominent Oxford theology scholar Tariq Ramadan.

Until last September, University of South Florida professor Sami al-Arian had languished in jail for more than five years as the victim of an ongoing government campaign of persecution. New hearings are exposing the over-zealous prosecution by and anti-Muslim bigotry of Assistant U.S. Attorney Gordon Kromberg, who claimed during al-Arian’s trial that “all Arabs lie.”

Israel’s critics face especially harsh attacks in the name of academic freedom, as DePaul professor Norman Finkelstein discovered in 2007, when he was denied tenure after an intense campaign against him was led by Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz. Now that campus activists across the country have begun campaigns to boycott, divest from and sanction the state of Israel for its actions in Gaza, we can expect such pressure from the right to continue, with demagogues like Horowitz leading the charge.

Horowitz’s efforts have had serious consequences in establishing a chilling climate on our classrooms and threatening activist professors around the country. Locally, his targets include affiliates of women’s and gender studies, including communication studies professor Dana Cloud, among others. While calling Cloud an “anti-American radical” who “routinely repeats the propaganda of the Saddam regime,” he has repeatedly denied her invitation to a debate.

UT students deserve more respect from Horowitz. We are not a bunch of mindless zombies, following the lead of every theory and idea that’s put before us. On Thursday, David Horowitz will be giving a lecture with the inflammatory title “Exposing Radically Leftist College Professors.” Let’s welcome him with a peaceful protest outside the Jackson Geology Building, Room 2.324 at 6:30 p.m.

Hmmm ... brilliant commentary so far. But I wonder what would a "Conservative" agenda look like?

First of all mandatory courses in the Protestant (sorry fellow Catholics, but at heart you are TOO liberal and take your religion TOO seriously for the white Protestant redneck) Evangelical version of the Bible.

Followed, of course, by mandatory Church worship (once again, sorry Catholics, but this would conform to the Baptist form of worship because you cannot be trusted NOT to take Jesus' words too literally concerning the POOR) .

Then of course Home Ec for the ladies so that they can be good homemakers and mothers. Men you would have your choice of Business, ROTC, Sports, Theology, or the various Police Sciences. I'm not sure if we would even be allowed to teach science courses as there is an inherent danger of Science contradicting the Scriptures and we all know how that issue should be decided (firmly in God's favor).

We would all have to pledge allegiance to the flag and take a loyalty oath and we would have to promise not to think too much on our own about current events or the world situation and to follow the example set by our Leader ( Dubya - the greatest!) and take every third day off just as he did as President.

And all of the College of Liberal Arts would be replaced by a world class golf resort where we would try to waste as many natural resources as possible and do as much damage to the enivronment as we could while eencouraging drunken frat boys to take the stuffing out of any "guests" whose politics seemed questionable.

Sounds great doesn't it?

OK, now lookee here Marshall Law, if that is your real name ... stop insulting Mr. Sager! We all know how you liberals think. You come here to our great state from some pinko socialist land to the North (like Taxachusetts - still funny after all these years! Thank you Rush!) and then you start telling us how we should live our lives the whole time stealing our tax dollars so that you can push your liberal agenda which currently seems to be all about gays and hating God.

Stop pervertzing our curriculum to support your sexual perversions and liberal idolatry of money and superficial beauty! It's just like Obama (or should I say "Nobama"? Shout out to my frat bros!). That guy is just all talk. And talk about lack of experience? He's just fliudering around out there pandering to our enemies like France and Germany (never gonna forget 9-11 ya'll) instead of letting the free market sort itself out.

I'm telling you folks out here in the heartland it's lock and load time! If they close my local Walmart your gonna see one angry American and THESE COLORS DON'T RUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gee, Mr. Sager when you're not abusing and exploiting your employees your one heck of a tough talker.

I must congratulate you on your former (or is it still current?) chairmanship of the local Republican party. Now there are some people who are definitely not afraid of opening their mouths to speak before thinking. Your party has done an admirable job of keeping this state in the 19th Century. If it weren't for pro-business state laws and the lack of a state income tax the great state of Texas would not be able to compete economically with the rest of the country since it is largely populated by brain dead kneejerk Conservatives. I'm sure this is all fine with you since as a fairly intelligent "elitist" you can intellectually as well as emotionally manipulate these morons into supporting policies which are not in their economic or social self-interest.

I applaud you sir!

So long as great (and fair to middling) minds here in Austin continue to agree to disagree, yes indeed, our sabers shall surely cross again. Also, my apologies, Brianna, for the uncalled for diminutive pejorative "little." In trying to be cute, I came off as crass. I ask not your forgiveness, merely your forbearance. I remain. . . The Cowardly Liberal!

To Fly,
Thanks for spelling my name right. And just a little tip: As long as we stick to our priciples this nation was founded on and it's people still recognize deep down in their hearts, that is the protection of life, liberty, property, and faith...
We're winning.
So remember that, it's Brianna with two n's. It'll come in handy because I'm sure you'll see Collin, Ed, Jenna, Dr.Sager and I for years to come.

Best,
Brianna

Well. . .g-gee Mister Sager. . . when you put it that way. . . May-maybe it was wrong of me to be such a typical cowardly liberal like our president. I g-guess maybe next time I'll keep my mouth sh-shut and leave the fancy talking to you and Colin Harris. You won't tell Sheriff Taylor on me will you? If I promise to get my haircut at Supercuts instead of down at Floyd's?

It is true that it does not matter what you call yourself. It is obvious you are a cowardly liberal who is unwilling to stand up in front of the public and tell them what you really think. We all know people like you. Some hide from the public what they really think, e.g. Obama, because they know they cannot get elected if people really knew who they were and what they stand for. Others like you hide themselves for fear of losing something, If this is such a liberal campus, why not come out in the open and take responsibility for your insults and cheap shots. I would think you would be applauded. Or are you ashamed of the way you communicate? The evidence is obvious.

As a Texas Ex now living near Seattle, WA, I am so proud to read such an excellent editorial in The Daily Texan! "Divide and conquer" has always been a successful strategy of our ruling class. When I was at UT in the 60s, the designated "enemies" were the communists and the blacks. Now the designated "enemies" are the Muslims and anyone else who objects to Israel's ongoing slaughter of the Palestinians and the theft of their land and water resources. Knowing the truth really is the essential for becoming free, and I applaud The Daily Texan for publishing this fine essay.

No, let's not try to understand the world, let's just keep doing what we've always done and everybody else can just DEAL. If that means sometimes they've got to fly planes into our buildings, we can just sneer at them and say,"Is that all you got? Is that really the best that you can do?" Then we can go bomb, say, Venezuela. Hey, stuff happens. Freedom's messy.

FLASHBACK: When asked whether he thought that "the West was in some way responsible for the tragedy of September 11," Finkelstein belched:

"Regrettably, it's payback time for the Americans and they have a problem because all the other enemies since the end of World War Two that they pretended to contend with . . . were basically fabricated enemies... Frankly, part of me says... 'you know what, we deserve the problem on our hands because some things bin Laden says are true.'"

Colin, I'm not trying to be a campus celebrity. It matters not at all what I call myself. If I call myself Hal Incandenza, how are you to know whether or not that is my real name?

Boy, you're still smarting about the misrepresented ration, huh? Tell it to Jack Daniels, man. Tell it to Mr. George Dickel.

@ Fly

I'm honored you would call me out by name while remaining anonymous. Why don't you do me a personal favor and come out for just like five minutes before the speech (you don't even have to listen to this fruitcake) to get a scope on the ratio of protesters to nonprotesters. I can only speak for myself, but my problem with the DT's treatment of the Ashcroft speech was how they misrepresented the ratio of protesters to observers. I hope they accurately represent the Horowitz event, even if the protesters are large in number.

As a veteran of the famous "Funeral for Academic Freedom" (1944), I found this article exposing the fallacies and misrepresentations of Harowitz a breath of fresh air. As a former student of Prof. J. Gilbert McAllister, the man who preached "education by irritation," who was consistently decried as a pro-communist professor, I learned never to take stories of a faculty's left wing preaching too seriously, and I learned to examine always the logic of the so-called evidence. And it is refreshing to be able to read in a university publication like the DT an article that practices just such scrutiny. (Class of 1949)

Here we go again. Right wing fruit cake shows up on liberal campus, protesters make him feel unwelcome, Texan covers event including that fact that protesters perhaps cause Horowitz to realize that this isn't Texas A&M (hello, YCT-- did you get bad directions?) and then Colin, Ed, Jenna, ol' man Sager and maybe even little Brianna have a big boo hoo about the liberal bias of the Texan.

Sorry, conservatives-- it was pathetic the first time, it will only be a farce the second. Wonder why you're always on the losing side now? Because W. blew it for you. Fun while it lasted, wasn't it?
