Sorry, drone owners: South By Southwest has a strict no drones policy.

During the 7-day festival, Austin police department officials will be stationed in crowded areas to monitor for drones, according to a blog post on the official SXSW website. More than 70,000 are expected to attend the festival in downtown Austin this year.

"SXSW has a strict no drones policy due to the safety risks drones present to the public, and pursuant to City of Austin Ordinance, Chapter 13-1,” the post states. “This policy was established after consultation with drone experts, user groups, municipal authorities and aviation safety experts.”

Those in violation of the policy can be arrested or fined, according to the statement, but exceptions can be made if the drones are used in areas “where safety measures, such as tethering to the ground are implemented."
