After performing in Austin for South By Southwest, New Zealand synth-pop band The Naked and Famous return to Austin on their first U.S. tour. Butcher keeps meat local, seasonal

The aroma of fresh herbs and meats cooking on the stove was inescapable Wednesday afternoon thanks to the employees of Dai Due butcher shop using the shared kitchen space of Spirited Food Co. Wednesday is hog day, and they had 272 pounds of meat to make into breakfast sausages, salted pork and smothered pork chops in spring onion gravy for the farmer’s market on Saturday.
Students screenplay gains recognition

Andrew Lanham hopes to catch a glimpse of the famous Marfa lights on his first trip to the West Texas city this weekend, although they won’t be the main reason for his trip. A second-year graduate student in the radio-television-film program, Lanham will be there to see his award-winning screenplay “The Jumper of Maine” performed as a stage adaptation at Crowley Theater.

The 76-year-old head monk Venerable Bancha Temprom sits cross-legged on a golden-colored mat, eyes closed as he chants mantras. About 20 people in prayer, mostly Thai and mostly women, sit before him repeating the mantras. A couple new to the scene watches curiously, but it isn’t the first and probably won’t be the last intrigued couple to come wandering into the prayer room.

There was a buzz of excitement surrounding the sixth-grade class of KIPP Austin College Prep as they waited in line outside an animatronic pumpkin-headed tree monster Tuesday evening. Their chatter was soon broken up, though, when a man wearing the mask of some deformed creature suddenly starts sniffing through their line, wildly swinging a club around.
