Last month marked the 100th anniversary of soccer at the University of Texas, celebrated by a special centennial match at Whitaker Fields where the men’s club soccer team faced off against coaching staff and alumni.

Although Texas recently lost in its dual meet against Arkansas, on Jan. 9 it was listed as the No. 3 team in the preseason indoor national team rankings by the USTFCCCA.

“I think the biggest thing that he did was that he took the time to befriend every single person,” head coach Elbert Ortiz said of former player Michael Purgason, who died in a car accident this past summer.
