Police identified the two individuals found dead in West Campus apartment as UT graduates Stacy Barnett and John Goosey and classified their deaths as a double homicide Wednesday.

Barnett and her boyfriend Goosey, both in their early 20s, were found dead Tuesday afternoon at the Preservation Square Condos at 904 W. 21st St., when Barnett’s parents asked friends to check up on her. Barnett, who graduated in May, planned to return to her parents’ home in Houston but never appeared there.

Lt. Mark Spangler of the Austin Police Department’s violent crime unit said both Goosey and Barnett had been shot and preliminary evidence suggests they were both killed by someone they knew.

“There was no sign of forced entry into the apartment, so we think at this point that while that is still a possibility, we believe whoever may have committed this crime at least knew one of the residents,” Spangler said.

Investigators are still trying to piece together the events of that night, but police have no leads or suspects in the case. At least 10 people, friends and neighbors of the two residents, have been interviewed by police, and the number is growing, Spangler said.

“We are coming to you, we are asking for the public’s help,” Spangler said.

“Right now, we are actively looking for whoever or whomever would have committed these murders,” Spangler said. “We are doing a full and detailed background on them, and we hope that information will give us additional clues. Any little piece for us can potentially lead to another lead for us.”

Spangler said Barnett had been in contact with friends around 9 a.m. Tuesday morning and was packing her belongings for her trip home. At 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, she was found dead along with Goosey.

The apartment where the homicide took place was sealed by police security tape along 21st Street.

One resident on the street said he was not home when emergency crews responded to the bodies’ discovery, but said his wife heard Barnett’s friends call police. The man said he was not afraid for his own personal safety, confident the number of police officers and the amount of media attention surrounding incident would have driven the perpetrators away.

For Barnett and Goosey’s friends and family, questions still remain as to who could have committed the murders.

Jennifer Rangubphai, a business major at St. Edwards University and Barnett’s cousin, said she was driving along Congress Avenue with a friend when she learned Barnett had been murdered.

She said she had to pull over and let her friend drive because she was shaking so much.
“I really didn’t understand what was going on,” Rangubphai said. “That anyone could do this is just unbelievable.”

The last time she and Barnett spoke was almost a week ago, when Rangubphai said they met for lunch. There, Barnett never hinted there were problems in her life.

“She always let on that everything was fine,” Rangubphai said. “She was a beautiful person. She would never hurt anyone. She was just an all-around good person. She was always active and doing things.”

Rangubphai said she did not know how long her cousin and Goosey had been dating.
“We don’t really know a whole lot about him,” Rangubphai said.

A friend close to Goosey, who did not want his name printed, said he learned of his friend’s death Wednesday morning.

“We don’t know if it’s a random act of violence or if he got mixed up in something,” he said. “I am still shaking. It’s just a feeling of disbelief.”

Police said they want residents to remain alert.

“Until we have somebody that we are going to hold in custody and responsible for these crimes, we want people to be vigilant,” Spangler said. “We want them to be aware of their surroundings, and we also want them to know we are doing our best to find the persons responsible.”

Anyone with information can call APD’s homicide hot line at (512) 477-3588.

I am in utter disbelief of the people who commented so rudely to this article. Stacy was my best friend and Johnny was an amazing person. Yes, he made some mistakes but he loved stacy with all his heart and she was the same with him. You would be SO lucky to know them. I thank God everyday that she was a part of my life, however short. Her parents are so lovely and supportive of all of us as we are of them. She is deeply missed. This is only a pause in our friendship, I know she's watching over us. And for those of you who speak of the "scum" in West Campus, go look in the mirror, you make up that scum. The type of scum that would write such insensitive words when you have no idea what you are talking about. Johnny and Stacy deserve better than that. Like I said you would have been lucky to know such wonderful, genuine, caring people. I love you stace.

WTF it's hard to put so much blame on goosey for being a dd, that ricky kid would rob gas stations at gun point. At 19 to live that lifestyle and be capable of murdering. Clearly he wasn't all there. Godbless the families

I am afraid poster "db" hit the nail on the head when he said:

"Moreover, young white males especially those coming from affluent or well to do families rarely understand or comprehend the danger they are putting themselves and their loved ones in. "

I worked in a high school in an affluent area, and unfortunately many of the kids really did not understand how at risk they were at with certain behaviors. I feel terrible for the families of the victims here. It is terrible enough to lose a loved one through a heinous crime; it is doubly worse when something like drug dealing is involved. Drug dealing and drug usage rarely end well; if only those who think they can dabble and never get burned would understand this, a lot of tragedy and heartache could be avoided.

My heart goes out to both familes.

Diane-
I'm sorry that you had to read these horrible comments that one or 2 people wrote about your relative. I can assure you that the rest of Austin is mourning, and that is just a person with a cruel sense of humor. You're right- drugs or not- this is sad and wrong. Hopefully this Ricky Thompson guy is the guy APD was looking for and justice is served. Many prayers to your family.

This is to the people who want to get a discount on their rent, ARE YOU FOR REAL!!! DO YOU NOT KNOW THAT THEIR FAMILY COULD BE READING THIS CRAP? JUST BECAUSE THEY COME FROM MONEY, DOESN'T MAKE THIS LESS PAIN FULL! this was my cousins son, his pride and joy, a hard working man, his son and his sons girl friend had so much potential and no one for no reason had the right to do what they did to these two kids, what kind of monster would do this? shame on all of you for the pain full words that you are putting in writing, you never know if such a tragedy could come knocking on your door, speculation is ignorance, the truth will come out, weather it be drug related or not, that doesn't make this right. SHAME ON ALL WHO MAKE LITE OF THIS HORRIFIC CRIME!!!

It's just as safe as any area where there's a heavily concentrated population of young people. No one is taking into account the fact that the amount of living space in West Campus has grown over tenfold in just the last five years. Don't go rant about how awful some place is to live just because something bad happened. Consider the facts, and wait until the motive is determined before you rush to judgment.

Anybody know when this place is available for leasing? Do they cover utilities? I'm willing to move in with the old carpet as long as I get a month's free rent. Is it 1-1 or 2-1 , etc? Is there parking available?

To the first person who commented on this article, I am struck by your insensitivity to the murders of two young people. You are wondering when the apartment will be up for lease and if it will be discounted? I am sad for you that you cannot look beyond yourself and be respectful.

if they had a lead they most likely wouldnt let the public know until it was for sure...also to catch the suspect off guard

I'm looking for a cheap place to stay in West Campus. Does anyone know when the place will be up for lease again? I'm hoping there will be a discount because of this homicide.

I really can't believe that the cops have no leads or anything at all on these murders. I guess I am naive to believe that a killer is always going to get caught. Does APD lack resourses to properly investigate a crime like this? Just curious.

Hey db why don't you think before you write something that is based on absolutely zero facts. Don't be too quick to judge. You're opinions are hurtful, damaging, and completely unwarranted at this time.

So sad for the families of these two bright young people with so much life ahead of them. This is extremely disturbing that this could occur so close to campus. Be vigilant and stay safe all of you.

Police will likely discover that Mr. Goosey involved himself with the wrong crowd and sadly it cost him his life and his girlfriends.

The level of violence surrounding drugs today is escalating, and considering how close we are to the epicenter of the drug war (Mexico) odds are very high that this young man became involved with a very dangerous element. Moreover, young white males especially those coming from affluent or well to do families rarely understand or comprehend the danger they are putting themselves and their loved ones in.

However, what I find most disturbing today is the number of young women who opt to stay with men who clearly put their lives in danger.

Please, if you sense that your boyfriend or even husband is on the wrong track and it could harm you LEAVE ASAP.
Tell your family and friends and get out.

My heart goes out to the families of these kids.

I live on riverside and I still would rather live in west campus if it wasn't so expensive. And I think that Construction

place where the construction workers fell is haunted or is going 2b haunted.

I hate how people blindly defend this town. Please correct the flaws in your high crime rate city and then you can defend it. UT is a way better school than the scum that surrounds it

Austin has a low murder rate, high crime rate. A lot of those include stabbings and robbery though. Even though Austin has a low murder rate, weren't most of the murders students? The cab incident, longhorn landing, now two murders in West Campus, thats not counting the nonmurders- a stabbing 2 weeks ago in west campus and a stabbing on-campus during finals. I live in West Campus and its not the safest place in Austin to live but that's because so many people who aren't students loiter and stalk these premises.
There are much safer college towns then Austin; I'm not expecting it to be crime free but isn't there something else this city can do (besides carrying shotguns around, nice suggestion)
