No. 16 Texas extends win streak to 10 with road win in Morgantown

The No. 16 Longhorns extended their winning streak to 10 on Saturday as they took care of business against No. 18 West Virginia, 73-63, in Morgantown.

Junior guard Ariel Atkins and freshman forward Joyner Holmes led the way for the Longhorns with 15 points apiece. Atkins shot an efficient 6-7 from the field and turned out a game-high three steals. Senior center Kelsey Lang, junior guard Brooke McCarty and sophomore guard Lashann Higgs rounded out the group of five Longhorns who scored in double digits.

Texas sits atop the Big 12 alongside Baylor as the only perfect teams in conference play. The Longhorns are off to a 6–0 conference start for the first time in program history. The victory marks the first time in program history that the Longhorns have started 6–0 in conference play.

Texas shot 50 percent from the field for the second-straight game. Despite the triumph, the Longhorns went 0-10 from the three-point line. The Mountaineers won the battle from beyond the arc as they connected on for three pointers.

The Longhorns have been dominant on the boards this season, but were outrebounded for just the second time this season as the Mountaineers won the rebound battle, 35-28.

Senior center Lanay Montgomery did a little bit of everything for the blue and gold, posting the game’s only double-double with 12 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks in 38 minutes of play.

After trailing at the end of the first quarter, the Longhorns rattled off a 12-0 run to start the second. The burnt orange held its ground in the second before taking a 35-24 lead into the half.

After the break, Texas extended its lead with the help of a 25-point quarter and a few runs down the stretch. The Mountaineers punched back in the fourth quarter, but it was too little too late.

The Longhorns are back in action on Tuesday as they host No. 22 Oklahoma at 6 p.m. at the Frank Erwin Center.
