Police arrested UT defensive end Henry Melton early Friday morning and charged him with driving while intoxicated. Melton, 20, was arrested at 2:30 a.m. by the Austin Police Department while heading westbound on the 600 block of Sixth Street.
According to The Associated Press, Melton failed a field sobriety test, used profanity and was insulting during his interview with Officer Steve Martinez.
Melton was released on bond at 8:15 a.m., according to AP.
Melton, who is listed as 6-foot-3-inches, weighing 268 pounds, was originally recruited by Texas coach Mack Brown as a running back and served primarily as the third-down running back in close-yard situations. He experienced immediate success, rushing for 433 yards and 10 touchdowns, sharing the workload with Jamaal Charles, Ramonce Taylor and Selvin Young, winning the national championship in 2005.
Melton's production dropped off sharply last year, when he rushed for 193 yards on 45 attempts, as Charles and Young saw the majority of the carries.
At the end of the season, the team announced that Melton would be converted to a defensive end, and with the team's two starting defensive ends Tim Crowder and Brian Robison, drafted during the NFL Draft, Melton was expected to compete for the starter's spot.
Texas athletics spokesman John Bianco said coach Mack Brown is aware of the arrest, but is out of town and unable to comment. In a statement released through the athletics department, Brown said he was disappointed with the arrest.
"We're disappointed anytime one of our players is accused of wrongdoing," Brown said. "We have a great group of guys and we will thoroughly investigate this situation."
