Gov. Rick Perry announced his appointment of three businessmen to serve on the UT System Board of Regents late Friday afternoon. The new regents' terms will expire Feb. 1, 2013. The appointees replace three women regents--Rita Clements, Cyndi Tayor Krier and Judith Craven. Though their terms expired Feb. 1, they have continued to serve on the board, awaiting Perry's careful selection of new regents. A Perry spokeswoman told the Texan earlier this month that the governor would make a decision when he saw fit, emphasizing quality over punctuality. Perry did not replace Regent Robert Estrada, whose term also expired Feb. 1.
The board approves all UT System construction projects, has the ultimate say in how much a UT institution can raise its tuition and works with the UT Investment Management Company. The regents are not paid.
