The Second Street district celebrated its second birthday this week and offered free food and drinks to patrons passing through the area Thursday night.

Partygoers, some bringing their children and pets, attended events showcasing area businesses from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

The combined residential and commercial district is located between Second and Third Streets, and Colorado and Guadalupe Streets, next to city hall and Lady Bird Lake. Clothing and home decor shops line the street level along with restaurants, and residents live in apartments and condominiums above.

Volunteers painted the faces of children and the young-at-heart outside the Dell Children's Museum, while patrons inside enjoyed the 15-percent discount.

"People started showing up before the time we were supposed to start," said Julie Almaguer, marketing and communications manager for the museum. "Our most popular designs are lightning bolts and T-Rex."

Across the street at home decor shop Design Within Reach, patrons sipped free wine and beer while waiting in line to have a live photo booth picture taken.

"We have boas for people to dress up in," said Karen Rego, a photographer for Korey Howell Photography. "We're all about having fun here."

Store visitors took home a strip of three photos, personalized with a Second Street Birthday design, from the home decor store.

Paciugo Gelato offered free tastes out of its kiosk two blocks away, in front of Lambert's Downtown Barbeque restaurant. If tasters brought the sampling stick to the Paciugo store, they got 10 percent off a $3 cup of gelato.

Inside every store and restaurant, shoppers filled out and dropped raffle tickets inside a bowl. At the end of the night a $2,000 prize, which consisted of gift certificates from every store in the area was given away.

In addition to the district prize, jewelry store Shoreline Gallery raffled off items at the end of the night, and passed out margaritas to its shoppers.

"This is our first time to the Second Street district," said Bernadette Veneski, a Westlake resident. "We read about the party in the newspaper and decided to come check it out."
