Two-year-old Nisan Avraham inspects a bicycle at Parking and Transportation Services' Annual Bike Auction Thursday evening on the rooftop of Trinity Garage.

Despite the sweltering heat and sunlight in the early stages of the auction, masses of students made the trek up to the top of the garage to browse and bid on the variety of bikes being auctioned. The selection of more than 150 bikes included BMX, cruiser, mountain and road bikes.

With past auctions, the average winning bids usually range from $25 to $35. Some go as low as $7. A high-end Gary Fisher bicycle can reach up to $300.

PTS workers spend the year leading up to the auction gathering donated, abandoned and impounded bikes. PTS bicycle coordinator Samuel Cortez is the event's main organizer.

"We try to get more people on bicycles," Cortez said. "Otherwise, these bikes might end up in a landfill."
