Sections of West Cesar Chavez Street were closed Saturday and Sunday as part of the long-winded $7 million Cesar Chavez Two-Way Conversion Project, causing traffic to be rerouted. This was the first of three upcoming weekend closures for the street.

The project will add another lane to Cesar Chavez Street. Work began in November and was originally planned to be completed in April. Construction has been delayed for more than two months because of special events and changes in the original construction plans, said project manager Rick Colbrunn.

The project, which city council approved in 2005, won't be completed until at least August, he said.

"It's pretty inconvenient because most of these days are on the weekend," Colbrunn said. "We prefer to get out there on the weekend as much as possible because we are not dealing with the increased volume of traffic we have on the weekday."

He said many of the city's roadway construction projects are pushed into weekends and the summer when there is less traffic volume.

A number of current projects are close to campus and in the downtown area, including road improvements and utility line replacements on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, which runs south of campus, and work on Duval Street at 38th Street.
