A former employee of Motorcars LTD in North Austin shot himself Thursday afternoon after a verbal argument with the shop's manager.

The 54-year-old shooter, identified by the Austin Police Department as Mickey Carroll, walked into the auto shop disgruntled and armed, said Detective James Mason of the Austin Police Department. Carroll fired shots at the manager as he ran out the front door and continued east along the U.S. 183 feeder road near Anderson Mill Road, Mason said.

The manager escaped unharmed, but Carroll shot himself in the wooded area behind the Anderson Mill Animal Clinic, which is next door to the auto shop.

"It all happened so fast, and we heard two gunshots," said Renee Houseman, an employee at the animal clinic. "We saw someone run past our front door, and then everyone started moving and running."

Houseman said employees at the clinic immediately locked the back doors and all animals and employees were safe.

Carroll was found alive at the scene and was flown to Brackenridge Hospital via STAR Flight.

"We wouldn't have STAR Flighted him if he weren't alive, but we didn't think he was going to make it," Mason said.

He was pronounced dead at the hospital due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

About four or five Williamson County police officers, several police officers on motorcycles and about 15 APD officers were on the scene. Motorcars is located on the division line of Travis and Williamson counties.
