OMAHA, Neb. - It took two seconds for Taylor Teagarden to form tackle J. Brent Cox, and another two seconds for the rest of the Longhorns to reach the pitcher's mound.
The 2005 Texas Longhorns (56-16) earned the right to dog pile in Omaha as well as their place in history Sunday after a season filled with injuries and setbacks. The Longhorns completed the improbable journey by battling past Florida 6-2 to take the best-of-three championship series in two games at the College World Series.
"We had such a tough road to get here so to end the season like this, it's special," said leadoff hitter and right fielder Nick Peoples, who started three of the five games in Omaha by getting on base and scoring a run.
Texas appeared in the championship game three out of the last four years, winning in 2002 and 2005 but falling to Cal State Fullerton in 2004. The Longhorns earned a third-place finish in 2003.
Six Longhorns earned spots on the All-Tournament Team including David Maroul who was named Most Outstanding Player. Maroul hit .500 in the CWS with two doubles, two home runs and eight RBI.
"I can't ask for anything more," said Teagarden, who hit .353 with one home run in the series. "To win a national championship, we're going to be remembered forever. People are always going to talk about the 2005 Texas Longhorns."
The team is scheduled to arrive at Disch-Falk Field between 4 p.m and 4:30 p.m Monday. There will be a 30-minute program with athletic director DeLoss Dodds, coaches and players followed by a highlight video and the lighting of the tower.
