Armed APD officers fill work site, leave without making an arrest

About 20 armed Austin police officers stormed West Campus Tuesday night.

Flashing lights and patrol cars clogged the intersection at Rio Grande and 22nd streets as officers surrounded a nearby construction site. Several cops stood cautiously with their guns drawn, peering around the corner of the structure to check for a supposed armed suspect. The supervising sergeant on scene would not comment, claiming there was nothing newsworthy and that no arrests had been made.

Several students passed within feet of the scene before realizing that several officers had their guns drawn. History senior James Richards said police arrived at about 10:50 p.m.

"Every few minutes, six cop cars came, and then here came three more and three more," Richards said. "I walked up, and cops had their guns out and they were kind of surrounding the building."

One officer told spectators that the Austin Police Department responded to a 911 call that said an armed assailant walked into the building. He said police apprehended the man, only to realize that he was a security guard hired to patrol the premises. After about an hour on the scene, the Texan saw officers quickly jump into their cars and drive away empty-handed and without comment.
