UT police said five gold athletic championship rings were stolen out of a secured office in Bellmont Hall between Oct. 16 and Oct. 22.

This is the second time championship rings have been taken from the same sixth-floor office in less than two months. According to police crime logs, two championship swimming rings were also stolen between Aug. 27 and Sept. 5.

Police estimated the loss at $1,500.

Sgt. Donna Maga of UT's police department said the two burglaries may be related. Both thefts occurred without any evidence of a forced entry. Maga said the complainant, who she would not name, regularly locked the office.

The rings likely belonged to a coach in the athletics department, Maga said.

Maga would not elaborate on what sport or year the championship rings in the most recent theft were awarded in order to assist the investigation, which will concentrate on places where the stolen rings may be sold.

"We look everywhere that can possibly be looked at, from pawn shops to Craigslist to people that buy gold jewelry," she said.
