After completion of a weekend retreat, 19 UT students passed a leadership skills exam and received a national student leader certification.

The National Conference on Student Leadership was held Jan. 25-27 at the Radisson Hotel on East Cesar Chavez Street and brought together undergraduate members from the UT Leadership Board and Leadership and Progress, as well as graduate assistants from Student Activities and Leadership Development.

The conference was composed of workshops that dealt with organizational management, publicity and promotion, conflict resolution and community building, said communication studies senior Marjorie McLenan.

Participants in the conference came from universities and community colleges of varying sizes from across the nation, including Georgetown and Columbia Universities, said marketing senior Chris Ochoa, a member of the UT Leadership Board.

"It broadened my personal perspectives, and I got to see what sort of issues there were at other colleges," Ochoa said. He added that student involvement was considered an issue at other colleges, but not at UT.

Government senior Matthew Barry, president of the Undergraduate Business Council, said the conference brought together a number of things he learned from being at UT and participating in student groups.

"It was a good affirmation of my time on campus in terms of preparing me for leadership," Barry said.

The UT Leadership Board is accepting applications for their annual Swing Out Awards for student organizations demonstrating excellence in leadership, which will be presented April 18.
